Conversation with Semillistas – Renaturem: The role of planting and direct seeding in Mediterranean forest restoration

At Semillistas, we deeply believe in the power of conversation as a tool for transformation. That’s why we promote discussions: relaxed spaces where we sit down to talk with people who know a lot about the things that matter to us. Sharing knowledge is sowing life, and each conversation is a seed that can germinate in many ways.

In this new episode, we had the pleasure of talking with Emilio Laguna and Jordi Cortina, as part of the Renaturem project. Together, we addressed a key issue for ecological restoration in the Spanish Mediterranean: the role of planting and direct seeding in forest restoration. We discussed the current status of afforestation and reforestation in Spain, what we understand by successful restoration, and whether planting and direct seeding are mutually exclusive paradigms or, as we argue, methodologies that can and should complement each other.

Throughout the talk, one fundamental idea emerged: restoring forests is a very long-term endeavor. The decisions we make today will bear fruit in 50 or even 100 years, something that does not always fit well in a society accustomed to quick answers and simple solutions. Forest systems are complex, especially on a large scale, and require patient, diverse, and well-informed perspectives.

We also reflected on the role of fire as a natural phenomenon in our Mediterranean ecosystems and on the need to decide, as a society, what kind of forests we want and what level of resilience we are willing to accept. Completely eliminating fire is not only impossible, but can lead to even more catastrophic scenarios.

At Semillistas, we insist on the importance of connection. When people participate in actions such as sowing seeds, planting trees, or caring for natural spaces, an emotional bond with the land is created. That thread, which starts out almost invisible, ends up awakening curiosity, knowledge, and commitment. It is not just a matter of civic responsibility, but of allowing nature itself to do its work in us as well.

This discussion is the result of collaboration between Semillistas and the LivingLab Renaturem. If you are interested in getting involved in forest restoration in the south of Alicante, we encourage you to follow the work of Renaturem and continue sowing, together, possible futures for our forests.
