On October 4, 2025, we had the opportunity to share a face-to-face workshop in Armilla on direct acorn sowing methodology applied to reforestation. It was a space for collective learning in which we delved into the scientific and technical foundations that underpin our field interventions.
Led by Daniel Calatayud, we addressed key issues for improving our practices. We discussed seed biotechnology, differentiating between orthodox and recalcitrant seeds, and analyzed how factors such as moisture content and temperature influence the storage and germination of acorns. We also reviewed conservation techniques that optimize results and better control germination processes.
We devoted a significant part of the workshop to understanding the germination process in the field, both in natural and anthropogenic regeneration, and we conducted a critical review of common direct sowing practices. Our goal was clear: to move towards increasingly rigorous and efficient sowing that is adapted to the conditions of the Mediterranean forest.
At Semillistas, we believe that sharing knowledge is also a form of sowing. We continue to work to ensure that each restoration campaign is supported by the best possible technical foundation and by an increasingly trained and committed community.
