Last Saturday, 18 October, we were in Almócita sharing a very special day dedicated to seed improvement and germination. It was an event full of learning, exchange and reflection on the importance of caring for, conserving and strengthening life from its origin: seeds.
We had the collaboration of the Trotamundos Animado Association and the Almócita Town Council, and the activity was made possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030. Thirty-two people from different parts of the province of Almería, the Alpujarra and Granada participated: farmers, members of collective urban garden projects and representatives of organisations such as the Cádiar Seed Bank.
During the workshop, we delved into the germination processes and explored how techniques such as priming can improve the resistance and effectiveness of sowing. We also reflected on the importance of conserving native varieties and strengthening seed networks, as many communities in Latin America and Spain are doing.
The day combined theory, practice and group work. We demonstrated different priming techniques and tools that allow this process to be carried out even without laboratory equipment, promoting sovereignty and the democratisation of knowledge about seeds.
The reception was very positive and we were left with a common feeling: the need to continue learning, sharing and multiplying spaces where the conservation and good use of seeds are a pillar for building real food sovereignty.
We would like to give special thanks to Paco, from the Trotamundos Animado Association, and to the people of Almócita, for their hospitality and for keeping alive a culture of care for agriculture, ecology and people. This is the third time we have returned to this municipality, and we always feel at home.
We will continue to sow knowledge, collaboration and hope. Because caring for seeds is caring for the future.
